There is no way to tell if a potential candidate for turning into a vampire will be psychologically strong enough to handle the change. Sometimes the seeming strongest will go mad very quickly. And sometimes the weakest (mentally) mortal will become a strong, sane vampire. This is completely unpredictable and should be considered before turning a mortal.
Many of the oldest vampires have said that is good for a fledgling to live out at least one lifetime posing as a mortal before completely secluding themselves from the world. This could save a fledgling from going mad.
It is said that vampires have no emotions. This is not true. Vampires can cut themselves off from emotion, or mask their feelings, but vampires can feel emotions if they so choose. Some of the most charismatic and popular vampires, in fact, are completely ruled by their emotions.
Often, vampires' lives end in suicide. There is any number of reasons, but they have been known to remain out in the sun, or throw themselves into the fire to end it all.
